Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Thursday welcomed the conciliatory remarks by the Tamil Tiger leader, saying he saw a strong chance of finding a political solution to end Sri Lanka's 18-year-old separatist war, according to local media reports.

Wickremesinghe said he will try to balance his concerns before deciding whether to lift a ban on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran said at his first news conference in 12 years on Wednesday that a ban on his group needs to be lifted before the Tigers can participate in peace talks in Thailand next month.
