Jiang Meets Schroeder, Presents Proposals on Sino-German Ties
Chinese President Jiang Zemin, who is in Berlin on a six-day state visit to Germany, held talks with Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder on Tuesday and made proposals for bringing bilateral relations to a new height in the new century.
Chinese President Jiang Zemin, who is in Berlin on a state visit to Germany, held talks with Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder on Tuesday (April 9) and made proposals for bringing bilateral relations to a new height in the new century.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two nations. Jiang and Schroeder had an in-depth exchange of views on bilateral relations as well as international and regional issues of common concern.
Jiang proposes deepened trust and exchanges
In a four-point proposal, Jiang said the two sides should continue contacts and exchange of visits at the top level so as to deepen mutual understanding and trust and implement the consensus that has been reached.
Both countries should also further develop cooperation in the fields of politics, economics and culture, explore more cooperation sectors and channels and strengthen people-to-people contacts, especially those between their youths, he said.
The other two points are to enhance mutual consultations and coordination on regional and international issues and promote mutual respect and consensus.
"Differences in social systems, cultural traditions, values and economic developments should not hinder bilateral cooperation," Jiang stressed while calling for increased mutual trust and more consensus.
"It conforms with the fundamental interests of the two countries and peoples to maintain a long-standing and stable cooperative relationship," Jiang noted.
During the past thirty years, Jiang said, although the world situation and the conditions in both countries had undergone profound changes, "we have worked to develop and strengthen bilateral friendly cooperative ties."
He also noted the important status that both China and Germany share in the international community. He said China values Germany's increasingly vital role and influence in Europe and international affairs.
Schroeder: huge potential for bilateral cooperation
For his part, Schroeder said the overall Germany-China cooperation has developed smoothly. He said that Jiang's visit will serve as a big push to the relations between the two nations.
Schroeder called Jiang's proposal as far-reaching and significant in enhancing mutually beneficial cooperation in various sectors.
He agreed that the two countries should expand their bilateral exchanges at different levels and in various fields, and maintain frequent dialogue and coordination on issues of mutual concern.
There still exists huge potential for bilateral cooperation in economy, trade, culture, education, science and technology, and both sides should further combine their efforts to make their cooperation achieve continued concrete results, Schroeder said.
Views on Mideast situation
The two leaders also exchanged views on the Middle East.
Jiang said that U.N. resolutions should be implemented and that Israel should stop its military operations and withdraw from the occupied Palestinian territories immediately.
Jiang arrived here Monday on a second state visit to Germany. He first visited the country in 1995.
Germany is the first leg of Jiang's five-nation trip, which also includes Libya, Nigeria, Tunisia and Iran.
