President Jiang Meets German Politicians
Visiting Chinese President Jiang Zemin met with German politicians Tuesday in Berlin, including former Chancellor Helmut Kohl, Free Democratic Party Chairman Guido Westerwelle and Democratic Socialist Party Chairman Gabriele Zimmer.

Jiang: Sino-German cooperation faced with new opportunities
Jiang told Kohl that at the beginning of the new century, Sino-German cooperation is faced with new opportunities for development and the Chinese side will join hands with the German side to push forward the mutually beneficial cooperation.
Kohl said that Germany and the European Union welcome China's rapid development and hope China will play a bigger role in international affairs.
He said there exist broad prospects for bilateral cooperation and consolidating cooperation with China has become a consensus of various parties in Germany.
In a meeting with Westerwelle, Jiang said the Free Democratic Party has contributed to the smooth exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in the past three decades.
Westerwelle: Germany to promote all-round relations with China
Westerwelle said the younger generation of his party's leadership will stick to the set policy, take a positive attitude towards cooperation with China and be ready to make their due efforts to promote the all-round growth of bilateral relations.
In a meeting with Zimmer, Jiang said both sides should further explore the possibility of cooperation to push bilateral ties to anew high.
Jiang arrived here Monday afternoon for his second state visit to Germany, since his first in July 1995.
Germany is the first leg of Jiang's two-week five-nation trip, which will also take him to Libya, Nigeria, Tunisia and Iran.

I. Political Relations
China and the Federal Republic of Germany established diplomatic relations on October 11, 1972, after which the bilateral relations have developed very smoothly.
II. Economic and Trade Relations
Germany is China's largest economic and trading partner in Europe. The bilateral trade volume reached a record US$14.35 billion in 1998 as opposed to only US$ 273 million in 1972.
III. Exchanges in Other Fields
China and Germany inked an inter-governmental Agreement on Scientific and Technological Cooperation back in October 1978. In 1993, the two countries signed the "Joint Statement on Conducting Cooperation in the Fields of Environment and Development between the Governments of China and Germany" and "Summary of Talks" aimed at furthering the inter-governmental cooperation in science and technology.
