What Pipe Dreaming Are Taiwan Separatists Engaged In?
"Sunlight, sand beach, sea waves, cactus...," is a fascinating aria familiar to Taiwan compatriots who have long expressed their longings for a peaceful life across the Taiwan Straits. A wide response has also been evoked by this aria among their mainland compatriots in voicing their feelings and common aspirations for a happy prosperous motherland to be built to include Taiwan.
Nowadays, however, there are a few "Taiwan independence" zealots, who are just trying all their possibilities to trample upon the good wishes of the Chinese nation across the Taiwan Straits. Backed by foreign arms they seem to have become mad with wild ideas of turning our Taiwan Island into a "warship" of international anti-China forces and a "powder barrel" to curb China.
Pinning their hope "on using force to resist reunification", the Taiwan authorities have turned Taiwan into an importing depot of foreign weapons and one of the world's largest expositions for sophisticated arms. Recently they have been seen in every possible market to buy weapons and seek "coordinated defense" arrangements with their foreign backers to split China. "Taiwan independence" zealot Annette Lu has all the more blatantly declared that she wants to make Taiwan an "unsinkable aircraft carrier".
"It's a matter of life or death when fighting a war". Since separatists are making every effort to arm themselves to the teeth for separation of Taiwan from the embrace of the motherland, is it possible for Taiwan compatriots to have a sound sleep? Insomnia and fear naturally bring on nights of nightmares. Certainly no "Taiwan independence" maniacs will be allowed to achieve that end.
Living in peace, a life of development represents the mainstream opinion of Taiwan compatriots. They hope to see a betterment and development of cross-Strait relations and lead a life rhythmic of "coco" (???) in Taiwan. But diehard separatists have by their actions run opposite to the good wishes of Taiwan compatriots. They refuse to recognize the one-China principle irrespective of a deadlock in cross-Strait relations. To push for "Taiwan independence" they purchase weapons on a big scale, move to buy arms for both "defense" and "offense" and to prepare for action "beyond" Taiwan to replace "effective deterrence". Taiwan, the "happy fleet" of Taiwan compatriots is to be turned into a "'Taiwan independence' aircraft carrier" charted on a course of perils and disaster.
Even the notion of separation of Taiwan from the motherland is simply catastrophic. The separatists know that there will be no peace to speak of for them ganging up completely for private gains and for their bigotry and miscalculations of the situation across the Taiwan Straits. They have embraced a blind faith in the protection to be rendered by "foreign weapons". To them, foreign weapons are an all-powerful panacea. Since the separatists have devised their own program they are well backed by foreign weapons and our Taiwan compatriots cannot but help worry over a "powder barrel" to be ignited by the separatists.
Chaos already rules in today's Taiwan. A languishing economy is being developed and with this is a rising "anguish index" among the general population of Taiwan. Instead of competing with the mainland to be better in developing the economy as declared by the Taiwan authorities what they have come to see is just the staging of a farce: There are no steps being taken to a cure while their sweat and blood are being squandered on buying weapons around the world. Down in this bottomless "money pit" is only a ticket for boarding a 'Taiwan independence' carrier destined to be sunk by a "powder barrel". Therein lies the worry of Taiwan compatriots hoping things to be thoroughly put right in Taiwan
"Those who play fire will burn themselves". Taiwan compatriots will surely discard all these "Taiwan independence" zealots for their putting sand in the wheels of cross-Strait relations. And thus they will greet a new dawn. History will impress upon the "Taiwan independence" elements: "The common will of the people cannot be defied".
