Preparations for the third annual meeting of the Association of Asian Parliaments for Peace (AAPP) have been completed in Chongqing, a senior official of the southwest China city said here Monday.

To prepare for the meeting, Chongqing has spent over 100 million yuan over the past eight months on new street lights, roadexpansion, afforestation and upgrading of conference facilities, said Jin Lie, deputy head of the municipal people's congress.

"Now that the security work, the training of volunteers and various other works have been basically finished, the preparatory work has entered the countdown stage," Jin said.

The AAPP, a parliamentarian organization with 36 members from the Asia-Pacific region, will open its annual meeting in Beijing on April 16, after which the meeting will be moved to Chongqing from April 17-19.

Starting from Monday, about 1.5 million pots of flowers will line the city's main streets.

The city also demolished 1.75 million square meters of illegal buildings, to give way to 120,000 square meters of green land.

The five host sites, including the five-star Hilton hotel and the Great Hall of Chongqing People, are all ready for the meeting.

The municipal authority has mobilized 40,000 policemen for the security work.

About 251 liaison officers and a large number of volunteers will serve the VIPs in English, Japanese, Russian and Arabic.
