China to Plant Trees Along Yellow River with Japanese Funds
A program to build a shelter belton the middle reaches of the Yellow River was initiated at a localforest farm in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region Friday.
A program to build a shelter belton the middle reaches of the Yellow River was initiated at a localforest farm in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region Friday.
Chinese officials and Japanese diplomats attended the launchingceremony.
The afforestation project, which is the first of its kind to use donations from Japan, aims to plant trees on 4,281 ha of desert land, where over one million people live.
The Japanese government will donate 1.5 billion yen for the project, which is expected to be completed by 2005.
According to sources, the Japanese government has been involvedin a number of afforestation projects in the autonomous region since 1989. Foreign experts and researchers from 15 nations have also made study tours of the area over the years.
Deserts cover 2.62 million sq km of China's land area, and are encroaching at a rate of over 2,000 sq km every year, affecting some 400 million people.
