By the year 2000, the risk of landslide from old manmade slopes in Hong Kong had been reduced to less than 50 percent of the 1977 level, the Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) of the Civil Engineering Department has said.

The department, which is responsible for monitoring all sizable manmade slopes and retaining walls in Hong Kong, said by 2010, the risk would be further reduced by another 50 percent of the year 2000 level.

Statistics released Friday by GEO also showed that more than 470 people were killed by collapse of manmade slopes and retaining walls in the 50 years after 1947.

Hong Kong used to have tragic record of fatal landslides, the department said, citing two major landslides in 1972, which killed 67 people and 71 people, respectively.

However, the number of casualties has been cut down to one in the last four years, it said.
