The European Union (EU) and China should strengthen dialogue in the interest of both sides. Jean-Claude Juncker, the prime minister of Luxembourg, made theremarks here Friday when delivering a speech at Beijing Foreign Studies University. His speech was titled "A Firm Partnership Between EU and China".

Juncker noted that the EU and China have different situations and goals, but share common interests. China, with its large territory and population, plays an important role in the world, and is a stable factor for the stability of the international currency system.

China rose above the Asian Financial Crisis, and has contributed greatly to the world's currency system, and it has also made great achievements through its opening-up policy, Juncker said.

Moreover, he said that EU and China are seeing satisfactory development of cooperative relations. The two sides should not focus only on trade and economic relationship, but also seek a more stable and strong partnership. They should strengthen political dialogue concerning issues of vital importance, and enhance exchanges and cooperation in such fields like human rightsand environment protection.

After the speech, Juncker answered students' questions concerning the EU currency policy and Luxembourg's investment in China.

Juncker arrived in Beijing on April 4 for a working visit to China at the invitation of Premier Zhu Rongji.
