The chief of Sri Lanka's ceasefire monitoring mission Norwegian Major General Trond Furuhovde will meet separatist Tamil Tiger rebel leaders on Sunday to discuss ceasefire violations by the rebels, the official Daily News said on Friday.
According to the monitors, 33 truce violations were recorded during the past month of which 31 occurred in Batticaloa in the east of the country and the other two in Mannar and Vavuniya in the north. The violations ranged from extortion, provocation and forced entry into military areas by the rebels.
Recently the Muslim community of the country has complained that the Tamil rebels had demanded ransom from them.
The Tamil rebels had been moving as a unit without notifying the monitoring mission which amounted to a violation of the agreement, Furuhovde said.
Furuhovde said that there were no serious violations reported from Jaffna but the mission was vigilant to see that no incidents occur after the rebels commence their political activity in the area following the establishment of their political office there on Monday.
