Eight Israeli policemen and three protestors were injured Thursday in a violent clash outside the U. S. Embassy in Tel Aviv. Two protestors were arrested, Israeli TV reports said.
Some Israeli Arabs and left-wing protestors were carrying flags outside the embassy, demanding the United States pressure Israel to stop the military offensive in the Palestinian areas in the West Bank.
The Israeli Knesset (parliament) Thursday conducted a stormy debate about the military operation, with right-wing lawmakers exchanging harsh words with those from left-wing parties.
Three parliamentarians, who were participating in a special session, were dismissed from the discussions as a result.
There were also left-wing youths observing the debate. They were later removed from the Knesset stands as they condemned the government and waved a signboard bearing words accusing Prime Minister Ariel Sharon of "cooking up another Lebanon" in the Palestinian territories by launching the current military operation.
More protests are expected in Israel with the expansion of the military operation going on in the Palestinian areas and the call- up of reservists continuing for the offensive. Israel launched the latest operation a week ago in response to a wave of suicide bombings inside Israel.
