The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Thursday announced an ambitious 250 billion rupees ( 5.20 billion U.S. dollars) project to manufacture 140 Russian designed Sukhoi-30 MKI warplanes starting 2004.

Plans are afoot to take up manufacture of 140 SU-30 MKI Sukhois with an investment of 250 billion rupees (5.20 billion dollars) after buying 50 of them from Russia, HAL Chairman N.R. Mohanty told reporters in Bangalore.

He said that 50 Sukhois will arrive in India by 2003 under a contract signed in 1996 and in order to provide a continuity to the process, the Indian government has taken a decision to allow HAL to manufacture 140 more, starting 2004.

All the 140 Sukhois manufactured in India would be delivered by 2017 to the Indian Air Force (IAF), Mohanty said.

The government took the decision for indigenous production of Sukhois after a Russian delegation visited several HAL plants across the country and certified that they had the facilities to manufacture the fighter jets indigenously, he said.

Meanwhile, HAL has signed a tripartite memorandum of understanding with the Defense Research Development Organization and IAF to upgrade MiG-27s procured from Russia, he said.
