Palestinian Legislative Council (parliament) Speaker Ahmed Qurei stressed on Thursday that the United States is responsible for forcing Israel to change its aggressive policy.

"The United States will not be able to let the Arab and Islamic world as well as the international community as a whole forget that it is responsible for Israel's aggression unless it takes serious and prompt measures to stop the Israeli attacks," Qurei told the Cairo-based Voice of Arabs radio.

"Such Israeli acts will go nowhere," he said, adding that the Palestinian people will continue their struggle against the Israeli occupation despite barbaric Israeli military operations against them.

An Israeli siege on Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in his office building in the West Bank city of Ramallah has entered its seventh day.

Israeli tanks rolled into Ramallah and shelled Arafat's compound Friday morning, marking the beginning of sweeping military offensives in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Arafat has still been besieged by Israeli troops and tanks despite the mounting call by the international community for Israel to lift its siege on Arafat and fully withdraw from the Palestinian lands.

On Thursday, the Israeli army declared that eight Palestinian towns and cities in the West Bank have been under its control as military zones.

It was reported that 19 Palestinians were killed in the Israeli operations on Wednesday alone. A total of 1,100 Palestinians have been arrested since last Friday.
