Israel Will Not Allow Continued Attacks in North: Sharon
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said on Thursday that Israel will not allow the continued attacks on the Israeli army positions along the border with Lebanon, Israel Radio said.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said on Thursday that Israel will not allow the continued attacks on the Israeli army positions along the border with Lebanon, Israel Radio said.
Sharon visited the northern army command early Thursday and heard a report on the situation in the north.
The Israeli outpost in the disputed Har Dov, or Shebaa Farms area, along the border came under frequent attacks recently by the Lebanese radical Islamic group of Hezbollah (or Party of God).
Sharon said that Hezbollah was responsible for the attacks and accused Iran of initiating the attacks with full backing of Syria.
Israeli security cabinet meeting held a five-hour emergency session late Wednesday night to discuss responses to the attacks as well as the military operation in the Palestinian areas in the West Bank.
Interior Minister Eli Yishai said Thursday after the meeting that Israel will "respond with the utmost harshness and severity."
The security cabinet also decided to continue the military operation in the West Bank despite strong international pressure.
The Israeli army expanded its offensive Thursday, the seventh day of the operation, with an overnight incursion into Nablus, the largest Palestinian city in the West Bank.
The Israeli army has declared eight Palestinian towns and cities under its control as "closed military zones."
