FM Spokeswoman on US Report of China Missile Deployment

It is not proper for the United States to talk about China's missile deployment in its coastal areas, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said in Beijing Thursday at a press conference, adding that China is a peace-loving nation and its national defense policy is defense-oriented.

PRINT DISCUSSION CHINESE SEND TO FRIEND

It is not proper for the United States to talk about China's missile deployment in its coastal areas, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue at a press conference on Thursday.

Zhang made the statement at a press conference when asked to comment on the U.S. Defense Department's reported remarks that China's missile deployment on its southeastern coast and the modernization of its navy may pose a threat to regional security.

Zhang added that China is a peace-loving nation and its national defense policy is defense-oriented.

A recent report of the Washington Times alleged that China is deploying CSS-7 missiles on the bank of Taiwan Straits opposite to Taiwan.

A reporter required the comments on the report from the Chinese side and said that the U.S. officials think the deployment will lead the United States to sale Aegis missile destroyer to Taiwan.

"The report has ulterior motives and is to confuse public opinion," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said at a regular press conference.

Zhang pointed out that the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan at any excuse is a violation of the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques and interference in China's internal affairs, and will be strongly opposed by both the Chinese government and its people.

China Willing to See U.S., DPRK Resume Talks
China would like to see the United States and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) resume talks, Zhang said.

China hopes that the United States would play a positive role in maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, said Zhang.

However, as both the north and the south sides of the peninsula are major players, the solution to the Korean Peninsula issue still must depend on the dialogue and cooperation between the two sides, she added.

Zhang also noted that China will indorse any effort contributing to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and will make its own efforts to promote this peace and stability.

China Concerned Over Middle East Tension
Zhang Qiyue said that during their coming visits to some Middle East countries, Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Premier Zhu Rongji will exchange views with leaders there on the present state of tension in that region.

China is deeply concerned and worried about the rapidly deteriorating Middle East situation, Zhang said at a regular press conference. China is seeking ways to ease the Middle East tension, and will make more efforts with the international community in this regard.

The Chinese government has appealed to parties concerned to unconditionally implement the related resolutions adopted by the United Nations Security Council, and ensure the safety of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.

China is in touch with the U.N. secretary general and other permanent members of the Security Council. China's permanent representative to the U.N. and his colleagues have been working hard to help reverse the worsening situation in the Middle East with their colleagues of other countries, she added.

Chinese leaders have voiced the country's stance on this issue in recent meetings with visiting foreign guests, urging Israel to withdraw its troops from Palestine as soon as possible.

Wu Jiuhong, director of China's office in Palestine, Wednesday conveyed to the Palestinian side the sympathy of the Chinese government and leaders for Arafat and their concerns about Arafat's personal safety.
