Norwegian Envoy Meets Sri Lankan Tamil Tiger Rebel Leaders

Norwegian ambassador to Sri Lanka Jon Westborg Has met leaders of separatist Tamil Tiger rebels and discussed arrangements regarding the forthcoming meeting between Norwegian Deputy Foreign Minister Vidar Helgesen and rebel leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.

Norwegian ambassador to Sri Lanka Jon Westborg Has met leaders of separatist Tamil Tiger rebels and discussed arrangements regarding the forthcoming meeting between Norwegian Deputy Foreign Minister Vidar Helgesen and rebel leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.

The Tamilnet website reported that the Tamil rebel political wing leader Thamil Chelvam and chief negotiator Anton Balasingham met the Norwegian ambassador at Mullaitivu in the north of the country on Wednesday. The meeting between Helgesen and Prabhakaran is scheduled for April 17 to decide on issues connected with the direct negotiations between the Tamil rebels and the government which is expected to be held in early May in Thailand.

It was confirmed at the meeting that the A-9 main highway to Jaffna from the south will be opened on April 8 and initially a bus service will be operated between Muhamalai in Jaffna and Omanthai in Vavuniya by the Tamil Eelam Transport Organization.

Repairing the damaged roads in the Vanni and purchasing new busses to improve the transport services were other matters discussed at the meeting between the Norwegian ambassador and the Tamil rebel leaders.

It is also reported that Prabhakaran will meet local and international media on April 10 in the north, his first meeting with media in 10 years.
