About 35,000 hectares of crops were destroyed by torrential rain storms that hit four Ecuadoran coastal provinces, the Andean country's Agriculture Ministry said on Wednesday.
The Guayas province was the most affected area where more than 12,300 hectares of crops were destroyed, including rice, corn, cacao, banana, cotton and fruits. Major losses included 23,300 hectares of rice, followed by corn with 6,600 hectares lost.
2,000 farmers were affected and over 4,500 houses were damaged, among which 136 were totally destroyed, according to the Agriculture Ministry.
Meanwhile, the Civil Defense Department reported that at least 16 people were killed, two have been listed as missing and 751 families were left homeless from the rain storms.
With President Gustavo Noboa on a visit to Asia last week, Vice President Pedro Pinto declared a state of emergency on March 22, noting that the situation had transformed from a roadway menace into a health and economic emergency within the preceding week.
