Working with their counterparts on the mainland, police of the island province have arrested one of the most wanted criminals after he evaded authorities for more than seven years, a newspaper report said on Wednesday.

Chan Long-lan, nicknamed the "Pangolin", escaped from a Taiwan prison in 1994 and later fled to the Chinese mailand. He was wanted in connection with numerous crimes, including murder, kidnapping, extortion, theft and drug and gun smuggling, the Taiwan newspaper reported.

In the spring of 2000, Chan was arrested by mainland police on charges that he kidnapped a businessman from Taiwan and extorted 10 million Taiwan dollars (US$285,714) from him. Chan was also charged with drug smuggling.

The head of Taiwan's Criminal Investigation Bureau visited the mainland last year, asking for help bringing Chan in and forging ties with mainland police, the report said.

Chan was released on parole in late March, and mainland and Taiwan police agreed to have him returned to Taiwan through a third region.

On Tuesday, Chan was transferred back to Taiwan through Macau -- China's special administrative region, the report said.
