Russia Lifts Ban on Meat Imports from China

Russia has lifted the ban on imports of pork, beef and poultry from China as of April 1, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation said Tuesday.

Russia has lifted the ban on imports of pork, beef and poultry from China as of April 1, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation said Tuesday.

According to the ministry, Russia temporarily halted imports ofmeat products from China from March 15, 2002. The issue aroused intense concern among relevant departments of the Chinese government and Chinese enterprises.

The ministry and the State Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine held a series of consultations with the Federal Veterinary Bureau of Russia, and the issue was properly resolved with the joint efforts of both sides.

The resolution of this issue has paved the way for further development of bilateral trade and economic cooperation, the ministry said.

The head of the Russian Federal Veterinary Bureau is to lead a delegation to visit China soon. They are expected to hold negotiations with the relevant Chinese authorities on improving the trade in meat products.
