Akbar To Remain In Detention During His Graft Trial
The Jakarta District Court here Monday dismissed the application by People's Representative Assembly (DPR) Speaker Akbar Tandjung to be released from detention during his high profile graft trial.
The Jakarta District Court here Monday dismissed the application by People's Representative Assembly (DPR) Speaker Akbar Tandjung to be released from detention during his high profile graft trial.
Akbar, who also heads the Golkar Party which controls 120 seats, the second largest in the 500-seat lower House of Parliament, is under detention by the Attorney-General's office since the middle of last month.
His lawyers have guaranteed his presence in court for the trial but the application was turned down by the panel of five judges headed by Amiruddin Zakaria.
Akbar's trial resumed Monday with the court convening at the Jakarta fairground in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, as officials feel that the Jakarta District Court building at the busy Gadjah Mada Road is too small for the large crowd which turned up at the trial.
The trial started last week under scrutiny by a large section of the Indonesian population eager to see the government put more vigour through the court processes in reducing the acute corruption problem in the country.
