Thousands of Jordanians on Monday staged demonstrations in major cities across the kingdom to protest against Israel's military escalation against the Palestinians and its siege of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
The largest rally was held at the Jordan University in northwestern Amman, where riot police were confronted with hundreds of student protestors, who demanded the lifting of the 1990 peace treaty with Israel and the opening of the border between the two countries to potential anti-Israeli fighters.
Police fired tear gas to disperse the students, and no casualties were reported during the confrontations at the most prestigious university of the kingdom.
Organized marches and demonstrations also took place in various towns of the kingdom, including refugee camps, to show support for the Palestinians.
The demonstrators denounced what they called brutal massacres committed by Israeli troops against the Palestinians during the past few days.
Meanwhile, an overall strike was launched in Amman where many stores remained closed on Monday and many people stopped work to show solidarity with the Palestinians.
