Jiang Calls for Pushing Forward 'Develop the West' Campaign

Addressing a meeting on the large-scale development of China's western regions, Chinese President Jiang Zemin called for enhancing awareness of the importance of this campaign and continuously pushing forward work in this area. "It is being carried out on 6.8 million square kilometers of land, and affects more than 350 million people," he said.

Addressing a meeting on the large-scale development of China's western regions, Chinese President Jiang Zemin called for enhancing awareness of the importance of this campaign and continuously pushing forward work in this area.

Held in this capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province on Monday, the meeting was aimed to review "Develop the West" work in six western provinces and regions over the past two years, as well as to chart the way ahead.

Jiang said that economic and social development in the western regions has exhibited a dynamic new look over the past two years, guided by the "Develop the West" strategy. Experience has shown that this strategic decision is completely right.

"The 'Develop the West' strategy is of great and far-reaching significance for accelerating the development of China's central and western regions, China's modernization and the resurgence of the Chinese nation," said Jiang.

"It is being carried out on 6.8 million square kilometers of land, and affects more than 350 million people," he added.

He urged Party and government officials to improve their managerial and administrative skills to better serve this campaign, saying that its success largely depends on the performance of these officials.

In addition, he asked various departments of the central government and eastern and central provinces to continue to support the development of the western regions.
