Annette Lu Cloaks Separatism in 'Democracy': Commentary

Taiwan's trouble-maker Annette Lu, the island's "vice-president", is stirring up trouble again. Under the banner of "democracy" and "human rights," Lu stepped onto international soil to hawk her "Taiwan independence" philosophy. A zealot in promoting "Taiwan independence," Lu is in fact an unwanted figure in the international community.

Taiwan's Annette Lu is making troubles again. In the Island, she flagrantly advocates splittism, recently she went to North America and Europe where she peddled her "Taiwan independence" idea under the pretexts of "democracy" and "human rights". Lu, who has become known for her engagement in "Taiwan independence" activities, is a person non grata in the world.

In her many previous overseas trips, she was either rejected or cold shouldered, this makes it clear how embarrassed she was as a separatist. Lu has been, therefore, complaining about this unceasingly, charging "the international community with a lack of justice" for restricting her "freedom" and "rights". However, with her stubborn "spirit of Ah Q", (Ah Q, a main character in Lu Xun's "The True Story of Ah Q" which describes a backward peasant who interprets his defeats as moral victories), Annette Lu, who has a special love for splitting activities, has not mended her ways. As her "brazen Taiwan independence" activities prove ineffective, she changes her tricks by wrapping her "Taiwan independence" and splittist words and deeds in the garb with a layer of "democracy", "freedom" and "human rights", in an attempt to confuse international public opinion and finally achieve her aim of "establishing a state flexibly". When she thought her deceitful trick was gainful, she was beside herself with joy, claiming that her trip had "broken through" the "blockade" and led to a "Normandy landing", ranting that "Taiwan's diplomatic spring" had come.

However, Lu's so-called democracy and human rights are nothing but a pretext and disguise. The fact is that the cross-Strait issue is not a question concerning social system, ideology and the concept of value, in essence, it is that China's territory and sovereignty admit of no partition, it is manifested in the struggle between defense of national unification and the vain attempt to split the country. Here, Lu stealthily substitutes State sovereignty for the concept of democracy and freedom, her aim is to change the reunification question concerning State sovereignty into ideology, so as to pander to the values of the West and find a reason which she thought to be tenable for her divisive acts and seek some people to echo her. On the question regarding the different social systems on both sides of the Straits, the Chinese government has clearly explained this in its policy known as "peaceful reunification, one country, two systems" formulated for the solution of the Taiwan issue, that means the two sides of the Straits belong to one China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of the Chinese territory. Taking into consideration the reasons of history and reality, China after reunification can allow long-term coexistence and common development of the two systems. Taiwan's original socio-economic system and lifestyles will remain unchanged. The phrase "remain unchanged" here is dealt with carefully after taking into consideration possible different understanding of the question resulted from difference in ideology and the concept of value. While prating about "democracy" and "freedom", Annette Lu and others either avoid mentioning the "one country, two systems", or do everything possible to distort and attack the "one country, two systems" policy, their real intention of seeking"Taiwan independence" under the pretext of "democracy" and "freedom" is as clear as daylight.

If Annette Lu has to carry out splitting activities stealthily in the international arena under the pretense of "freedom", "democracy" and "human rights", then her separatist words made in the Island have revealed her real intention.

Recently, Lu has openly made provocation in the Island, asserting that the United States has abandoned the three Sino-US joint communiques and that Taiwan should also bring out a "Forbidden City" of China. When the Island's media censured that Lu's misjudgment of the situation would lead Taiwan into a circumstance of ever-lasting damnation, Lu further declared that she would make Taiwan an "unsinkable aircraft carrier" against the mainland and make it serve as a "strategic hub" for encircling and blocking China. To put it bluntly, under the circumstance of the rapidly changing international situation, the bigoted Annette Lu, who is anxious to carry out the "Taiwan independence" idea, willingly becomes a piece of chess in the international anti-China forces, she even unhesitatingly takes Taiwan, a part of the Chinese territory, as an anti-China base and coerces the 23 million Taiwan compatriots into serving as stakes for her "Taiwan independence" gambling. Annette Lu, who professes glibly about acting in upon public will, recently has not only launched provocation against the Chinese mainland and the international community, but also has done things completely deviating from the mainstream public aspiration for peace, stability and development. But Lu does not think that the Island's public will is more important than her "Taiwan independence" idea, she believes that she can seek "independence" by relying on foreigners, therefore, she wants to counter herself to the opposite bank of the Straits, totally ignoring the urgent demand of the islanders for improving and developing cross-Strait relations. Lu's deeds have aroused maximal resentment of the Island's public opinion, the general public censure that Lu's deeds are dangerous moves designed to damage cross-Strait relations at the present stage.

Lu not only makes provocation against the Chinese mainland, but also launches provocation against the general public of Taiwan and the international community;

Lu is making troubles which affect not only the great cause of China's reunification, but also Taiwan's development and the stability of the Asia-Pacific region.

We advise Annette Lu and a few other diehard "Taiwan independence" elements: don't misjudge the situation, don't think that you can really gain influence by relying on foreigners and can unscrupulously divide the motherland. If you are bent on doing that, we can say with certainty that the thing you are waiting for absolutely will not be what you call "spring".
