U.S. President George W. Bush on Saturday discussed the deteriorating situation in the Middle East with five world leaders by telephone, the White House said.

Bush told leaders of Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Spain and thehead of the United Nations that recent escalation of violence in the Middle East would not stall U.S. peace efforts there, White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe told reporters at Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas.

"The president discussed with each leader the situation in the Middle East and reiterated that U.S. envoy General Anthony Zinni will remain in the region, and reaffirmed that the United States remains committed to getting back into the peace process," Johndroe said.

Earlier in the day, the United States joined other U.N. Security Council members in adopting a resolution calling for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Ramallah and other Palestinian cities.
