Iran and Belarus on Saturday pledged to diversify mutual cooperation in all areas, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi and his visiting Belarussian counterpart Mikhail Khvostov made the pledge during their meeting on bilateral ties in the day.

During the meeting, the two sides agreed to hold their first joint scientific and technical commission meeting in Minsk, Belarus, to implement agreements reached earlier to increase their trade volume.

Iran vowed to put preferential tariffs on Iranian goods exportedto Belarus to carry out agreements to drop double-taxation, encourage joint investment, promote cooperation in road transportation and establish the Iranian-Belarussian chamber of commerce.

Kharazi told Khvostov that Tehran and Minsk have to use their potentials to promote bilateral ties in all areas, while calling for an increase in the exchange of official visits to that effect.

For his part, Khvostov said that Iran has a significant status in the Belarussian foreign policy and Minsk is eager to promote bilateral relations with Tehran.

Belarus is looking forward to the anticipated visit of Iranian President Mohammad Khatami to Minsk, he added.

Khvostov arrived here Saturday morning for a two-day visit for talks on bilateral relations and mutual cooperation as well as regional and international developments.

During his stay, he will also meet Khatami, Majlis (parliament) Speaker Mahdi Karrubi and some other high-ranking officials.

It was learnt that Khvostov carries a message from Belarussian President Alexander Grigorievich Lukashenko for his Iranian counterpart Khatami.

Khvostov confirmed earlier in the day that he is here to pave the way for Lukashenko's future visit to Iran.

Khvostov will visit Oman, Bahrain and Morocco.
