Christopher Patten,member of the External Relations Commission of the European Union (EU), met Shanghai Mayor Chen Liangyu Friday in Shanghai.
Chen briefed Patten on Shanghai's economic restructuring and city development in which Shanghai had utilized foreign investmentvalued at 35 billion U.S. dollars, and greater progress was expected in the next 10 years.
Patten said the rapid economic growth in Shanghai had impressed the world and he hoped to further develop economic and trade relations between Europe and Shanghai, which, he believed, were mutually beneficial.
During his stay in Shanghai, Patten also addressed Fudan University and presented an inaugurated Shanghai branch of Eurochambers of Commerce.
Patten left for Suzhou in east China's Jiangsu Province this afternoon.
