The European Union (EU) on Friday called for a peaceful solution to the deteriorating conflict between Israel and Palestinian authorities by ceasing the gunfire first.
EU foreign and security policy chief Javier Solana held telephone talks with both Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres to press for a cease-fire.
"Arafat is our interlocutor, as EU leaders said at the Barcelona summit on March 16. He remains our interlocutor and the legitimate authority," Solana's spokeswoman Cristina Gallach said on the same day.
She said that although Israel has the right to fight terrorism, but the military means would not provide a permanent solution to the problem, adding that EU is now following the Mideast situationclosely and EU foreign ministers are also in contact with each other to monitor what is going on in the region.
