Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat on Friday urged Arab and foreign leaders to act as immediately as possible to end the Israeli army's offensive against his main offices in the West Bank town of Ramallah.
Arafat telephoned Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Abdullah Ibn Abdul-Aziz, Secretary General of the Arab League Amr Moussa and Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar, the Palestinian news agency Wafa reported.
Arafat briefed them on the situation around and in his office and urged them to move as soon as possible "before it would be too late to rescue the situation."
Earlier in the day, Arafat said that the Israeli attacks on Ramallah and at his office would shake the whole area of the MiddleEast.
"This aggression is not only aimed at me, it is against the Saudi Arabian peace initiative and against all Arabs," Arafat told the Qatar-based Al Jazeera Television from inside his office.
According to the latest report from Al-Jazeera TV, Israeli tanksdestroyed the fences around the compound of Arafat's headquarters and entered into it.
Fierce clashes erupted between Israeli troops and Palestinian gunmen around the headquarters, during which five Palestinians werereportedly shot dead and an Israeli officer was killed.
