Marine Disasters Leave 401 Dead, Missing in 2001

Marine disasters in China last year left 401 people dead or missing and caused economic losses ofabout 10 billion yuan (1.21 billion U.S. dollars), according to a report released by the State Oceanic Administration Friday.

Marine disasters in China last year left 401 people dead or missing and caused economic losses ofabout 10 billion yuan (1.21 billion U.S. dollars), according to a report released by the State Oceanic Administration Friday.

In a breakdown, the report said, six major storm tides were reported last year, with more than 14 million people affected. Thestorm tides caused losses of 8.7 billion yuan, 2.5 billion yuan less than the previous year, but the number of people dead or missing increased by 121.

Red tides occurred 77 times last year, 49 times more than the previous year, and the sea area affected reached 15,000 square kilometers, 5,000 square kilometers more than the previous year. And the losses caused by red tide amounted to one billion yuan.

Last year, huge waves sank or damaged 618 ships in eastern coastal Fujian and Shandong provinces, leaving 265 people dead or missing and direct losses up to 310 million yuan.
