Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp.'s (TSMC's) first 12-inch wafer fabrication plant in Tainan, southern Taiwan, is scheduled to begin productionat the end of this year, TSMC Chairman Morris Chang said Thursday.
Chang noted that the TSMC plans to invest 700 billion new Taiwan dollars over the next few years to advance its production in Taiwan, adding that the amount to be invested this year alone is estimated at 90 billion new Taiwan dollars.
Emphasizing the importance of the mainland market to Taiwan semiconductor manufacturers, Chang said that for the semiconductor sector, Chinese mainland is the world's fastest growing market, though it remains comparatively small for the moment.
It is estimated that the Chinese mainland market will account for 20 percent of the global demand in 20 years, he added.
