U.S. President George W. Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone on Wednesday to discuss issues of nuclear arms reductions and chicken ban, the White House said.

"Both leaders expressed their intention to make progress on key issues in anticipation of their May meetings in Moscow and St. Petersburg White House spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters.

They discussed progress on the agreement to reduce nuclear arms and noted U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov would meet in Spain early next month to push forward nuclear arms-reduction plans for their coming summit.

During their 20-minute conversation, Bush also raised the issue of Russia's current ban on U.S. chicken exports, and asked Putin for a quick solution to the issue, McCormack said.
