Phrases on one China Principle in Gov't Report Significant: Spokesman
The inclusion of the Chinese mainland's three phrases about the one China principle in the latest government report has fully expressed Chinese people's wish of early reunification of Taiwan with the mainland, a Chinese official said Wednesday.
The inclusion of the Chinese mainland's three phrases about the one China principle in the latest government report has fully expressed Chinese people's wish of early reunification of Taiwan with the mainland, a Chinese official said Wednesday.
"The one China principle is the foundation for developing relations across the Taiwan Straits and realizing a peaceful reunification, and is vital to state sovereignty, territorial integrity, China's prosperity, rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, and is closely related to the fundamental benefit of Chinese people including the compatriots in Taiwan," said Li Weiyi, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council.
"We believe that there is only one China in the world, that the mainland and Taiwan belong to one China, and that China's sovereignty and territorial integrity are inseparable," he said. The phrases had been written in the government work report which was approved by the annual session of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature, in mid-March.
"They fully demonstrate our kindness, sincerity and tolerance towards solving the Taiwan question and realizing the reunification of the motherland as early as possible," Li said.
"Those who advocates and promotes 'Taiwan independence' in any forms go against the general will of Taiwan compatriots in seeking peace, stability and development and will surely meet with firm protest among all Chinese people including Taiwan compatriots," the spokesman said.
Li said a great number of organizations in Taiwan are indignant at activities aimed at seeking "Taiwan independence" and rebuke splittists as tools who are manipulated by overseas anti-China forces.
Li stressed that "Taiwan independence" will only worsen the relations across the Taiwan Straits, bring instability and crisis to Taiwan and harm the compatriots in Taiwan.
Chinese president Jiang Zemin Friday urged Taiwan authorities to recognize the "one China principle" so as to reopen cross-Straits dialogues as soon as possible for improved cross-Straits exchanges, and for eventual peaceful reunification of the country at an early date.
