The State Development Planning Commission (SDPC) of China has begun to scrutinize rural electricity prices amid the restructuring of rural power grids in a bid to stamp out illegal charges.
The three-month inspection will also focus on the rural power grids restructuring since 2001.
The SDPC wants local price sectors throughout the country to deal with illegal charges more strictly.
Those found to have made illegal charges will be punished and urged to return the extra money.
In the worst cases, they will be prosecuted as well as fined, according to the sources.
