Kim Dae-jung Urges Revival of DPRK-US Talks

South Korean President Kim Dae-junghas written a letter to be conveyed to the leadership of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to urge revival of talks between the DPRK and the United States, government sources said here Tuesday.

South Korean President Kim Dae-junghas written a letter to be conveyed to the leadership of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to urge revival of talks between the DPRK and the United States, government sources said here Tuesday.

The letter elaborates Seoul's position on relations between thesouth and north on the Korean Peninsula and on the DPRK-US ties, while calling on Pyongyang to reopen dialogue with Washington, a senior government official said.

President Kim Dae-jung noted in the letter that if the outstanding issues between Pyongyang and Washington remain unsettled, a crisis might occur on the Korean Peninsula.

The government official said the letter will be conveyed to DPRK leader Kim Jong Il by Lim Dong-won, special presidential aidefor foreign affairs, national security and unification, during hisvisit to Pyongyang next week.

Lim was appointed as the Presidential Special Envoy Monday for the DPRK trip. He will meet with DPRK leader Kim Jong Il and briefhim on the talks between President Kim Dae-jung and U.S. PresidentGeorge W. Bush when the latter visited Seoul in February.

Local reports said details of Lim's visit to Pyongyang, such assize of the Seoul delegation, agenda and the flight course, are being discussed between the two sides, and that Seoul has proposedthe use of the Seoul-Pyongyang through route.
