Reception on Anniversary of Sino-Vanuatu Ties Held in Port-Vila

A reception was held on Tuesday in Port-Vila, capital of Vanuatu, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Vanuatu.

A reception was held on Tuesday in Port-Vila, capital of Vanuatu, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Vanuatu.

More than 170 guests, including Vanuatuan Prime Minister EdwardNipake Natapei, Deputy Prime Minister Rialuth Serge Vohor and somegovernment ministers attended the reception, jointly sponsored by Chinese Ambassador to Vanuatu Wu Zurong and Vanuatuan Foreign Minister Alain Mahe.

Wu said in an address that since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries, cooperation in various fields, including politics, economy,and trade, education and medical care, has witnessed marked advance, with bilateral ties featured by high-level mutual visits.

He said China and Vanuatu, both developing countries, have broad common interest in international affairs, and that still greater progress will be made in bilateral ties if the two countries make concerted efforts in the future.

In his part, Natapei said that Vanuatu and China have strengthened mutual understanding and cooperation since they set up diplomatic relations 20 years ago. He promised that his government would adhere to the "one China" policy.

He said the past two decades have proved that Vanuatu's promotion of diplomatic ties with China conforms to the interest of the Vanuatuan government and people.

Mahe expressed thanks to the Chinese government and the Chinesepeople for their assistance to his country, while reviewing the effective cooperation between both countries over the past 20 years based on mutual understanding and friendship.

He said that the Chinese government successfully settled the issues of Hong Kong and Macao and it would inevitably solve the Taiwan situation. He was confident that the friendly cooperation between Vanuatu and China would produce good prospects.
