A forum on cross-straits relations, arranged by the Chinese mainland-based Research Center of Cross-Straits Relations, began Tuesday in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province.
Tang Shubei, director of the research center, said at the opening ceremony that it is very important for scholars from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, the mainland and overseas to gather for in-depth discussions on the theory and practice of "one country, two systems".
Tang also reviewed the efforts made in the past year for carrying out the "peaceful reunification, and one country, two systems" principle and President Jiang Zemin's Eight-Point proposal.
Chinese culture, with its long history, is the backbone of national unity, the spiritual tie and the common treasure of all the Chinese. It is the substantial foundation for the reunification of China, Tang said.
He pointed out that reunification of the motherland has become a priority for all the Chinese people as mankind has entered the 21st century. The mainland side will continue to stick to the principle of "peaceful reunification, and one country, two systems" and will positively promote all cross-straits exchanges.
Over 100 participants including 46 delegates including scholarsand college students from Taiwan attended the forum.
Chinese president Jiang Zemin Friday urged Taiwan authorities to recognize the "one China principle" so as to reopen cross-Straits dialogues as soon as possible for improved cross-Straits exchanges, and for eventual peaceful reunification of the country at an early date.
