China-made Million-kw Nuclear Power Generating Sets on Schedule

Currently, China can build and operate the nuclear power sets of 300,000 to 600,000-kw respectively and after years' endeavor, China has been basically capable of designing the million-kw nuclear power plant, according to sources from the International Nuclear Industry Exhibition opened on Monday.

The nuclear industry is an important part of the high-tech industry, said Li Dingfan, general manager of the China National Nuclear Corporation. During the Ninth Five-year Plan period, China witnessed a rapid development in nuclear industry. This year will see a high tide of nuclear power construction. At the beginning of this year, two sets of nuclear power generators have been put into operation and another six sets, which are to be put into operation in the successive three years to come, are at present under construction. By the end of the Tenth Five-year Plan period, China is expected to reach an installed capacity of 8.7 million kilowatts.

China has achieved great successes in nuclear industry in recent years. Last year saw the 1st-phase project of Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant celebrated its 10th anniversary and this year is to see the 2nd-phase project of the Qinshan Plant and Ling'ao Plant get into operation for power generation.

The general manager also emphasized that as a hi-tech industry, the nuclear technology will make more contributions to the nation's economy and social development with a potential market ahead.

Present at the exhibition are over 120 units, including more than 60 domestic companies and some famous foreign corporations, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, Electric Corporation, Kansai Electric Power Co., Ltd, and some others.
