Chinese police are to launch a nationwide campaign against illegal migration from April 1, it was announced at a national conference on anti-illegal migration Monday in Beijing.

Major tasks
The action will center on stopping illegal mass emigration by boats, stowaways hiding in shipping containers and foreigners illegally migrating via China. The timely repatriation of foreigners illegally staying in China was also a vital part of the campaign.

Some participants at the conference organized by the Ministry of Public Security said illegal emigration still exists in some areas of China due to the impact of worldwide illegal migration and international criminal gangs.

Zhao Yongji, Vice-Minister of Public Security, urged police departments to adopt different methods to "dig out" "snake heads," or illegal migration organizers.

He also called for unified efforts by different departments of public security and more cooperation with foreign counterparts in information exchange and action.

China to Continue Combating Illegal Emigration
The Chinese government will continue to fight illegal emigration in closer cooperation with other countries, said Xi Jinping, governor of China's southeastern coastal province of Fujian.

Due to the fact that almost all cases of illegal emigration have international background and ringleaders and vessels normally come from abroad, international cooperation should be strengthened in the crackdown on illegal emigration, Xi said.

While ringleaders must be severely punished according to law, the public should be disillusioned of their dream of seeking windfalls overseas, the governor said at the ongoing annual session of the National People's Congress. In Detail
