General Secretary of CPC Central Committee, President of P.R.C. and Chairman of CPC Central Military Commission Jiang Zemin watched the successful launch March 25 evening of unmanned spaceship "Shenzhou - III" and made an important speech at the Jiuquan Launch Center. He said that China's manned astronautical technology has been at a new level.

On behalf of CPC Central Committee, the State Council and CPC Central Military Commission, Jiang extended his congratulations to all scientists, working personnel and PLA men who have taken part in the research, building and tests of the spacecraft.

After watching the lift-off, Jiang said the successful launch showed the Chinese people's spirit of constantly striving to become stronger, "the CPC Central Committee decided to carry out the manned space programme a decade ago."

Previous Two Unmanned Spaceships
  • On January 10, 2001, China launched the second unmanned spaceship "Shenzhou II" which was basically identical to a manned craft. Scientists designed space life sciences, space materials, space astronomy and space physics experiments under conditions of microgravity in outer space. In Detail>>>

  • The first experimental spacecraft "Shenzhou" was launched by "Long March" carrier rocket at 6:30 a.m. on November 20, 1999 and touched down in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region at 3:41 a.m. the next day. Chinese technologists for the first time assembled and tested the rocket and spaceship in a vertical way. In Detail>>>

  • In November, 1999, Chinese President Jiang Zemin wrote the inscription "Shenzhou" for the country's first test spacecraft which successfully completed its flight.

  • He pointed out that organizing the astronautical project is an important strategic arrangement by CPC Central Committee taking into consideration the overall situation of world science and technology development and the demand to put China on a higher science technology plane and speed up the country's modernization construction.

Jiang said that over the past ten years all working personnel who have taken part in the research, development and tests of the spaceship have made most of their effort in line with the spirit of past "two bombs and satellite" in building the country's nuclear force. They have united as one, working on their own and fighting tenaciously to have made a series of breakthroughs in pushing China's astronautical technology industry. This is particularly so as shown by the successful launch of "Shenzhou I", "Shenzhou II" and "Shenzhou III" in bringing the country's manned astronautical technology to a new level.

Jiang said that those efforts made are of utmost importance for China to scale the world's new hi-tech heights and make new advances in economic, science and technology and defense construction.

Successful launch of unmanned spacecraft "Shenzhou III" highlights new success in China's astronautical industry. It fully shows the indomitable spirit of the Chinese people fighting arduously in order to make the country strong and the superiority of China's socialist system, said Jiang.

Under this system, we can make concentrated efforts to go about doing big things - projecting undertakings on a large scale. It also fully testifies to the fact that the Chinese people are a nation with high caliber and the strength to take our place among the nations throughout the world.

He pointed out that successful launch of unmanned spacecraft "Shenzhou - III" will most highly give a boost to our fighting will, strengthen our national pride and further build the confidence of the Chinese people to push ahead the great cause of socialism in China.

Jiang stressed that in today's world science and technology have come to play an increasing part as the first dynamic force of production and these have been universally recognized as a force representing a country's comprehensive strength since new scientific technological advances are being made with every passing day.

The president said that we should seize on the time and meet all challenges we are facing to speed up our development and raise our science and technology level and the comprehensive national strength of China to a new high level.

Among those who accompanied Jiang Zemin at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center included Wu Bangguo, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and vice-premier, Zeng Qinghong, alternate member of the Political Bureau and member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, Yu Yongbo, member of the Central Military Commission and director of the PLA General Political Department, and Cao Gangchuan, member of the Central Military Commission and director of the PLA General Armament Department.

In November, 1999, Chinese President Jiang Zemin wrote the inscription "Shenzhou" for the country's first test spacecraft which successfully completed its flight.
