Saudi Peace Proposal for Israeli People, Not for Sharon: Lebanese FM
The present much-discussed Saudi peace proposal is for the Israeli people and peace-loving people worldwide, but not for Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in whom Arab leaders have lost their confidence, Qatar-based Al-Jazeera satellite television quoted Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri as saying on Monday.
The raise of the Saudi initiative was originally designed to push forward the Mideast peace process, Hariri said, adding that the 14th Arab summit due to open on Wednesday would help to revive the process, started from Madrid conference in 1991.
Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah Ibn Abdul-Aziz, in an interview with New York Times in mid-February, suggested that Arab nations normalize the relations with Israel in exchange for the latter's full withdrawal from all Arab lands occupied in the 1967 Mideast War.
The Saudi plan would be discussed at the foreign ministerial meeting, which was opened in Beirut in the day, said Al-Jazeera.
