Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said Monday that China is ready to expand cooperation with Indonesia in various areas and is fully confident of the prospects of China- Indonesia relations.

Li made the remarks during a meeting with Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri, who arrived in Beijing Sunday on a five-day state visit. This is Megawati's first visit to China as president.

Li said Megawati's visit will help strengthen the all-round cooperative and mutually-trustworthy relationship between the two countries.

Li recalled his visit to Indonesia in 1990 as premier of China, and said that to develop good-neighborly friendship and cooperative relations between China and Indonesia will not only serve the fundamental interests of the two, but will also help promote peace and prosperity of the region.

Briefing Megawati on China's legislative system, Li said China' s NPC pays great attention to developing relations with parliaments of Indonesia and other countries across the world. He welcomes the Indonesian parliament to send a delegation to attend the annual session of Asia parliaments, scheduled to open in China next month.

Li said he is glad to see that the Indonesian economy is recovering and its social order is returning to normal. Noting that ethnic Chinese in Indonesia is part of the great family of nationalities of that country, he sincerely hopes all ethnic groups in Indonesia can live harmoniously with one another.

Megawati recalled her first visit to China 10 years ago as a member of parliament. She said she can again feel the friendship the Chinese people cherish towards the Indonesian people when she returns to China this time.

The Chinese people and the Indonesian people should keep their friendship for generation after generation, said the president, who also brings her daughter with her on the current visit.

Megawati described her talks with Chinese President Jiang Zemin Sunday as "fruitful," saying they had reached a consensus on many cooperation projects and she is satisfied and glad with the results.

The president said Indonesia stressed the importance of building up a legal system, and is committed to wipe out corruption and social injustice. She promised that the Indonesian government will try its best to treat all ethnic groups on an equal footing and in a just manner.
