Vice-President Hu Jintao Meets Indonesian President Megawati

Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao said Monday that China is ready to make concrete efforts with Indonesia to push forward bilateral relations to a higher level.

Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao said Monday that China is ready to make concrete efforts with Indonesia to push forward bilateral relations to a higher level.

Hu made the remarks during a meeting with Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri, who arrived here Sunday on a five-day state visit. This is Megawati's first visit to China since she became president.

Hu noticed that Megawati and Chinese President Jiang Zemin had fruitful talks on Sunday, and reached a consensus on a wide range of issues. "That will vigorously push forward the development of China-Indonesia relations."

"We are glad to see that under the joint efforts of both sides, China-Indonesia relations have gained good development momentum in recent years," he said.

The constant exchange of visits between top leaders of the two countries has increased mutual understanding and trust, he said. Exchange at various levels between the two countries has been very active, with economic cooperation expanding and the two sides cooperating well in regional and international affairs.

Hu said Indonesia is an important neighbor of China, and it is a set policy of China to develop good-neighborly cooperative relations with Indonesia.

"China is ready to work with the Indonesian side, under the guidance of the spirit of the joint statement of the two countries, to continue to carry out all important consensus reached between leaders of the two countries, and make concrete efforts to push forward bilateral relations," he said.

Megawati said she agrees to Hu's comments on bilateral relations. She said her talks with President Jiang had achieved in satisfactory results and they agree that the two sides carry out as soon as possible all cooperation projects in different areas.

She said Indonesia is willing to work with China to grasp opportunities in developing bilateral relations, and bring their traditional friendship and friendly cooperation to a higher level.

Megawati stressed that the Indonesian government will continue to observe the one-China policy. She said Asian countries should strengthen unity and cooperation, and Indonesia will be committed, along with China and other Asian countries, to promoting development and maintaining peace.
