Jennifer Connelly won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at the 74th Academy Awards held Sunday at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood for her role in A Beautiful Mind, a top contender for the best picture category.
Connelly, 31, was lauded for playing the role of the wife of Schizophrenic Nobel Laureate John Nash though that she won the nomination for the first time. Once described as resembling a teenage Elizabeth Taylor, Connelly has graced the screens of theaters since 1984.
Born in New York in December of 1970, Connelly got her start in show business as a model at the age of 10 and made film debut in the film Once Upon a Time In America in 1984.
Connelly matured into an actress capable of taking on challenging roles in the 1990s, and her portrayal of a sensitive lesbian in the film Higher Learning displayed her abilities previously unexplored. She was nominated for an Independent Spirit award for her portrayal of a burned out junkie in the movie Requiem for a Dream in 2000.
In director Ron Howard's A Beautiful Mind, Connelly starred opposite Russell Crowe, last year's Oscar winner for Best Actor and this year's top contender. Starring the loyal wife of famed mathematician turned paranoid schizophrenic John Nash, Connelly once again showed her versatility and ability to gracefully shine amidst such notable talents as Crowe and Howard.
The annual Academy Awards were handed out by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This was the first time that the Oscars returned to its birthplace of Hollywood.
