The self-exiled chief negotiator for Sri Lanka's separatist Tamil Tiger rebel Anton Balasingham will visit the north of the country on Monday to start preparation for peace talks with the government, officials said.

Balasingham, who resides in London and suffers from a serious kidney illness, is expected to fly by seaplane from the Maldives to the rebel-held Wanni area in the north of the country for talks with the leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) Velupillai Prabhakaran.

Balasingham was quoted by the Sunday Leader newspaper as saying that Prabhakaran will meet local and foreign journalists in April and explain the rebel stance on the peace process in the country.

Officials said that Norwegian peace negotiator Erick Solheim will also arrive here on Monday. Norway has been engaged in brokering peace in the country in the past two years.

The government and the LTTE rebels signed an indefinite ceasefire agreement last month which has paved the way for the possible direct talks between the two sides.
