Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat on Sunday had a telephone conversation on the latest developments in the occupied Palestinian lands.

"The two leaders exchanged views on the current situation in the territories and preparations for an Arab summit to be held in Lebanon on March 27-28," an Egyptian presidential source told Xinhua.

The phone talk came amid reports that there have been intensive Arab and international efforts to enable Arafat to attend the upcoming Arab summit.

On the same day, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon hinted that Arafat would not be permitted to attend the Arab summit.

"Arafat will not leave (the West Bank city of) Ramallah as long as he does not act against terror," Sharon said at a weekly cabinet meeting.

Arafat, who had been confined by Israel to Ramallah since December 3 last year, is still banned from traveling outside of the Palestinian self-rule areas.

Israel conditioned Arafat's possible travel to the Lebanese capital of Beirut on his implementation of the U.S.-brokered Tenet plan after a ceasefire agreement is reached between the Palestinians and Israel.

The Beirut Arab gathering is of great importance, given that a Saudi Mideast peace proposal will be discussed by Arab leaders at the summit. If passed, the initiative will become an Arab one.

Last month, Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah Ibn Abdul-Aziz revealed his proposal offering the normalization of ties between Arab states and Israel in exchange for the latter's withdrawal from all the Arab lands it occupied in the 1967 Mideast War.
