China's top legislator Li Peng met Sunday with Joseph Kabila, president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

During the meeting, Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's supreme law-making body, spoke highly of Sino-DRC relations.

Although China and the DRC were far apart, marked achievements had been made in bilateral cooperation and mutual understanding and trust had increased, Li said.

China had always valued its ties with the DRC, Li said, adding that China and the DRC share a common interest on many international issues and the two also closely cooperated in international affairs.

Li said China hoped to strengthen cooperation with the DRC on the issue of human rights and oppose interference in internal affairs on human rights grounds by some western countries.

DRC values brotherly relations with China
Kabila, on his part, said the DRC valued the brotherly relations with China, adding the DRC people were striving for peace and reconstruction though war has brought about many difficulties.

While extending thanks to China for its long-term selfless support to the DRC, Kabila said he welcomed more Chinese enterprises to participate in the DRC's reconstruction and development.

Kabila is here for a four-day state visit at the invitation of Chinese President Jiang Zemin, who held talks with Kabila on Friday.

China and Congo
Political Relations
The People's Republic of China and the Republic of Congo established diplomatic relations on February 22, 1964, and the friendly ties between the two countries have enjoyed steady growth in strength and depth ever since.
Trade Relations and Economic Cooperation
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, China has assisted Congo in constructing some projects, such as stadium, radio station, parliament building, textile mill, water supply works, hospital, hydropower station, agricultural technology extension centers, etc. In 1997, the projects were forced to suspend as a result of the Congolese civil war. At present, the work of those projects is resuming.

From 1982 Chinese companies began undertaking contracted services in Congo and have made good achievements. In March 2000, the China Housing Construction Corp. signed a contract with the Congolese side on the construction of the National Radio and TV building, valued at CFAF 3000 million.
