Tianjin, a northern China port city, is holding international bidding for the construction of the first power plant fueled by household refuse.

The power plant, with a designed installed capacity of 18 megawatts, will consume 1,200 tons of household refuse, or a quarter of the city's total garbage, daily.

It is the largest nuisance-free garbage disposal project in Tianjin. Construction will cost 570 million yuan (69 million U.S. dollars) with some key equipment being imported.

A city with a population of more than 10 million, Tianjin discharges 5,000 tons of garbage daily, most of which is left outside.

A municipal official says the new power plant will usher in a new phase in the city's garbage disposal.
