Israeli-Palestinian Security Meeting Ends With No Agreement
The Israeli-Palestinian joint security committee meeting, mediated by U.S. Mideast envoy Anthony Zinni, ended Friday evening without reaching an agreement, Israel Radio reported.
The Israeli-Palestinian joint security committee meeting, mediated by U.S. Mideast envoy Anthony Zinni, ended Friday evening without reaching an agreement, Israel Radio reported.
The two sides were unable to agree on how to implement the Tenet plan and reach an understanding regarding a ceasefire, said the report, adding that the two sides agreed to meet again on Sunday.
The meeting was held at the residence of U.S. Ambassador to Israel Daniel Kurtzer in the coastal city of Herzliya north of Tel Aviv.
The Israeli delegation, led by Israeli General Security Service (or Shin Bet) chief Avi Dichter and Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Head of Plans and Policy Directorate Major General Giora Eiland, told their Palestinian counterparts to take actions to prevent suicide bombing attacks.
Israel cancelled a joint security committee meeting scheduled for Thursday night in the wake of a Palestinian suicide bombing attack in the day in central Jerusalem, which left three Israelis dead and more than 50 others wounded.
Zinni, who came to the region last Thursday for his third attempt to bring about an Israeli-Palestinian ceasefire, is pushing both sides to reach an agreement so that they can start implementing the Tenet ceasefire plan.
Both the Americans and Israel said that this is the precondition for allowing Palestinian National Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat to leave the Palestinian territories and travel to the Lebanese capital of Beirut to attend the Arab summit slated for March 27-28.
In a briefing to foreign envoys earlier Friday, Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres showed pessimism about the outcome of the current round of ceasefire efforts and called on the international community to exert pressure on the Palestinians.
