China Supports Exempting Debts From Heavily Indebted Poor Countries

China supports cutting and exempting debts from heavily indebted poor countries (HIPC), a high-ranking Chinese official who is leading a parliament delegation to Nigeria said Friday in Lagos.

China supports cutting and exempting debts from heavily indebted poor countries (HIPC), a high-ranking Chinese official who is leading a parliament delegation to Nigeria said Friday in Lagos.

"China has always attached great importance to cutting and exempting debts from HIPC countries," said Gan Ziyu, chairman of the Overseas Chinese Committee of the National People's Congress ( NPC), China's parliament.

"China has signed agreements with more than 20 poor countries on cutting and exempting debts," he noted.

Gan, who is also a member of the NPC Standing Committee, said China will continue working together with African countries in the fields of international affairs to protect the just rights and interests of developing countries.

He said that since China has been admitted to the World Trade Organization in the new century, Chinese-African friendly cooperative relations will be further strengthened in more aspects.

During their four-day visit to Nigeria, the delegation also held talks with Ghali Umar Na'aba, president of Nigeria's House of Representatives, on cooperation and exchanges between the governments and parliaments of the two countries as well on overseas Chinese affairs in Nigeria.

In addition, the delegation members paid visits to Wempco Group and the United Nigerian Textiles Industries PLC, two overseas Chinese-run factories in Nigeria, and held a discussion meeting with representatives of the local Chinese residents.

The Chinese delegation, which arrived in Abuja, capital of Nigeria, Monday evening, will leave Lagos, commercial center of the west African country, for Kenyan capital Nairobi Friday.

Nigeria is the first leg of the delegation's three-nation tour, which will also take it to Kenya and South Africa. The delegation is scheduled for home on April 1.
