New Zealand PM Meets Chinese FM in Auckland

New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark met with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan Friday evening in Auckland, the biggest city in New Zealand.

New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark met with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan Friday evening in Auckland, the biggest city in New Zealand.

During the meeting, Tang conveyed greetings of Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Premier Zhu Rongji to the New Zealand prime minister. He expressed his high appreciation for Helen Clark 's effort in promoting Sino-New Zealand relations.

Tang said that during her two visits to China last year, Helen Clark exchanged views with Chinese leaders on bilateral relationship in depth, thus greatly enhancing mutual understanding.

He told the prime minister that his current visit to New Zealand has made important achievements.

The Chinese foreign minister reaffirmed that the Chinese government pays great attention to the development of Sino-New Zealand ties and hopes the two countries would adopt a forward- looking attitude to further their relationship. He also appreciated the New Zealand government for its upholding of one China policy.

Tang said China would be more active in international affairs after its entry into the World Trade Organization(WTO), and China and New Zealand would have broader prospects for their economic and trade cooperation.

The New Zealand prime minister said her government attaches significance to its relations with China and will stick to one China position. She expressed her gratitude to the Chinese government for the warm hospitality it gave her during her visits to China last year.

Helen Clark congratulated China for its successful bid for hosting 2008 Olympics and entry into the WTO. She said she believes China will play a more important role in global arena and this will create more opportunities for New Zealand-China cooperation.

She noted China is a responsible power and New Zealand will be glad to see increasingly important role it will play in international affairs. She also hoped her country and China will strengthen cooperation in international and regional organizations.

Helen Clark and Tang Jiaxuan also discussed current international situation, anti-terrorism, and Iraq issue.

Chinese Ambassador to New Zealand Chen Mingming attended the meeting.

Tang will conclude his official visit to New Zealand and leave for home Saturday.
