Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan called on New Zealand Governor-General Dame Silvia Cartwright and Speaker of the House of Representatives Jonathan Hunt separately Thursday in Wellington.
Tang expressed his high appreciation for their efforts to promote Sino-New Zealand friendship. He noted maintaining frequent exchange of visits between leaders of the two countries has played an unreplaceable and important role in the development of bilateral relations.
In the past few years, he added, China and New Zealand have had a good momentum for developing their ties and made remarkable progress in exchange and cooperation in various areas. He said Sino-New Zealand relations have entered a mature and steadily- growing period.
The Chinese foreign minister said the Chinese government pursuits an independent foreign policy for peace, pays attention to furthering Sino-New Zealand relations, and is ready to strengthen its all-round cooperative ties with New Zealand.
He noted that the prospects for Sino-New Zealand friendly cooperation will be much brighter after China's re-entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The New Zealand Governor-general spoke highly of the achievements the New Zealanders of Chinese origin have made in the development of New Zealand economic and social fields. She said she was satisfied with the growth of New Zealand-China relations since the two countries forged their diplomatic ties 30 years ago.
Dame Cartwright said she would like to see growing New Zealand- China relations, especially increasing exchange and cooperation between the women and judicial personnel of the two countries.
Speaker Hunt said he believed China will have a better opportunity for development than other countries in the world after its re-entry into the WTO. He hoped leaders of the two countries would keep their frequent contacts and the legislatures of the two countries would further strengthen their exchange and cooperation.
